Won's history:
As
quoted from his own words:
- I was
7 around 1982 and my cousin was part of the breakdance scene
He
taught me and Rob (Rob Nasty my twin brother)how to do the worm and wave and
stuff
lil
things here and there
Then
around 1986 Breakin was considered played out for us in the Bay
At that
time people were gettin into party dances like the smurf, the pacman, runnin
man stuff like that
That
was around 1987 to 1989
Rob and
i started to play around with those dances
but it
wasnt until 1991 that the dance really talked to us
In that
period it wasnt really Bboyin yet
We had
a movement which we called Housin
(Not
house dancing)
The
fasion was more of a tribal look afrocentric look
panchos
afro hair
like
how Tribe Called Quest looked like in there first album
actually
we didnt have crews we had tribes like
Jughead
Tribe
Bubala
Tribe
360
Tribe
Jedi
Clan
Raggamuppets
StankWinos
just to
name a few
There
was this local HipHop tv show called Home Turf
on
there featured Dj Qbert and his dancers called the KnucleNeck Tribe was
eventually became West Coast Rocksteady (one of the first chapters of
RockSteady outside of NYC)
One guy
that myself, Bboy Wicket and Remind actually all of us was a influenced by a
Bboy named P-Kid
He had
a really dope style and mixed his powermoves in there he was kinda like our Spy
of NorCal
around
1993 i would say was the Return of the BBOY style
where
it was strait influenced by Beat Street
Sean
Ortiza member Sidewalk Breakers a crew from San Jose from the 1980s came back
and at
that time he was doing strait up combos
Flare-90-windmill
headspin
we
wernt used to that cuz all we saw was multiple windmills or headspins not
combos
At this
point came back the bboy Crews
from
the 80s like
Rock
Force Crew
Renegades
Crew
Rock On
Productions
UBC
And
then the SIdewalk Breakers tape came out
A
battle between the new SIdewalk and the orginal Sidewalk
(Poe
One correct me if im wrong)
This
tape was from 1985 and man it was crazy
Like
guys that literally danced like Ken Swift, Crazy Leggs,
Buck 4
but
they had advanced power
and the
concept of stackin back then
even a
spinal flare that looked like an airflare
this
tape influenced a Elmer from Rock Force
and he
did combos no one did before that we saw
and he
influnced Jazzy J from the Renegades
and
Jazzy J influnced a whole bunch of people
esp
Bboys in Korea cuz his combos where to crazy
At that
time in my research no one had a scene in North America
Like
New York and LA had good bboys
but no
scene where there was a jam every weekend
We did
The Bay
Area was having there Hip Hop Golden age
1991-1994
Mcs we
had Hiroglifics Souls of Mischief
Djs we
had Mix Master Mike, Qbert, Apollo, ShortKut
Graff
writers we had a legal wall called Psycho City were everyone from around the
world would come in and do a piece or throw up
Bboys a
jam every weekend where i would see Crazy Leggs
Zulu
Gremlin and Lil Ceasar
this is
all when i was 16 to 18 years old
so i
can say i saw it before the competitions
when
girls (yes girls used to go to all the jams)
used to
shout your name as you go out
Guys in
the corner with their black books doin throw ups
and Dj
Qbert was spinnin at these jams
those
were the days
i got a
lot more but ive said enough
till
next time -
